高等教育自学考试是国家的一种考试制度，短线自考是相对于国家统一自考科目中尚未开设的专业、由主考院校组织出题、在每年单独组织考试的一种自学考试办学形式。短线自考制度是学历教育体系中的一种新的办学形式，它不设入学门槛，为各类求学人士、尤其是年龄较大、又迫切希望提高学历层次或不参加普通高考而又想体验大学生活的人提供难得的求学机会。

长线自考是国家规定的主考院校和自考委发的文凭。

短线自考发的文凭是省内主办学校和自考委发的文凭。

主考院校一般是本省在这个专业有名气的学校，而主办学校可以是一般的院校。

短线自考的费用一般一年要几千元，考试容易通过一些。一般是利用双休日或平时白天及晚上集中授课，大部分科目由主办学校命题，公共课程参加全国统考，文凭省市认可。

长线自考费用低，但难度稍高一些。一般全国统一命题，文凭全国认可。
